Stroke is the first cause of disability, the second cause of mental decline (dementia) and the third most common cause of death, and account for 50% of emergency cases in hospitals world-wide.

This is a brain tissue necrosis due either to a lack of blood supply due to a blood vessel failure without the ability to take this supply adjacent vessels (ischemic stroke, 85%) or to cerebral hemorrhage due to rupture of a larger vessel resulting in tissue destruction (hemorrhagic stroke, 15%).
